The Smart Choice in Data Protection
Reliable, rapid, and low-cost backup and recovery. Protect and recover your data from human errors, disasters, and ransomware attacks. Fast recovery in-place from disk, tape and cloud.
DPX 4.10 extends GuardMode to Linux, improves quality of alerts, and adds UI and vStor enhancements:
  • Adds support for Linux servers and Samba shares to GuardMode and syslog notification, to provide early ransomware detection and notification before you do a backup; enables recovery from backups of only affected data.
  • Detects encrypted files and tracks the encryption process to understand scope of infection and to provide a list of affected files to restore.
  • Improves quality of alerts to backup admins and SIEMs by looking at file entropy and magic signatures on files suspected to be impacted.
  • Enhanced Backup Storage Management now allows for easy migration of volumes between pools and optimized settings, improving flexibility, efficiency and performance in managing storage resources.

  • Low cost, easy to understand licensing and storage model
  • A first-class support team that solves your problem
If you don’t have these, the rest doesn’t really matter. That’s why we’ve spent over 20 years focused on these core values.
Hyperscaler with DPX

Who doesn’t need a really low-cost, backup storage appliance? Or need a remote office or edge backup appliance?

Robust Backup and Recovery

DPX provides robust backup and recovery capabilities. Patented block-level protection reduces backup time and impact by 90%, for both physical and virtual servers. Files and applications are easily recovered directly from backup storage. You can have peace of mind that your data is secure and reliably protected per your Recovery Point Objectives (RPOs). The vStor backup repository is a flexible and scalable software-defined backup target that frees you from expensive backup appliances and vendor lock-in. It supports both inline source deduplication and compression and it provides point-to-point replication for DR or remote office support. You can archive data to tape or to cloud object storage.

GuardMode Ransomware Protection

Backups are your last line of defense against ransomware for recovering your data. DPX GuardMode provides an additional layer of ransomware detection to backup teams by proactively monitoring for suspicious activity and encrypted files. When ransomware strikes, DPX provides a list of affected files to restore and multiple recovery points so you can spin the clock back to just before the infection happened. Backups are immutable snapshots that can be stored as offline, air-gapped copies on tape and cloud object storage. Archived data cannot be modified or deleted, protecting backups against early deletion and providing an extra layer of off-line protection.
Catalogic DPX Use Cases
Backups are a necessary insurance policy. They might be used to restore a database table or a single file after accidental deletion, or to recover your servers and data after a ransomware attack. In the worst case, you can recover all your data and systems lost to a natural disaster or a major ransomware attack. In all these use cases, broad application and systems coverage and reliability is paramount.

But backup can also be more than an insurance policy. With instantly accessible backup images, you can leverage backup data sets for many other tasks, such as dev-test, DevOps, reporting and compliance, and analytics.

DPX delivers across a range of enterprise backup and recovery use cases, including all your old favorites!

The vStor Software-Defined Backup Repository

The vStor backup repository is a flexible and scalable software-defined backup target that frees you from expensive backup appliances and vendor lock-in. Built on open source components, vStor can use any block storage without restrictions. It supports both deduplication and compression for efficiency and provides point-to-point replication for DR or remote office support. With vStor, you can build different backup targets to meet your performance needs. For example, a single VM to support a small office, or a high-performance vStor built on all-flash storage for your most critical workloads. There are no additional licensing costs for vStor repositories. vStor can be deployed quickly as a virtual appliance or installed on a physical server to meet performance needs. For more details on vStor, contact us.

Multi-purpose Backup Images

Catalogic DPX stores backups as usable snapshots. Data can be accessed for recovery purposes, but it can also serve to provide needed data for other use cases, such as reporting, dev-test, analytics and so on.  Snapshot backup images can be mapped to compute nodes with only a few mouse clicks, giving you fast and easy data delivery.

Simple Object Recovery

DPX provides rapid, easy recovery of application data objects. This includes Microsoft Exchange (emails, contacts, tasks, etc.), Microsoft SharePoint (documents, lists, sites, etc.) and Microsoft SQL (individual table items). Easy drag-and-drop recovery uses mapped backup images that take only moments to access, dramatically reducing recovery time.

Unique NetApp Integration

For NetApp users, DPX offers unique integration with NetApp ONTAP. DPX sends data blocks directly to NetApp storage, eliminating the need for media or device servers. This increases efficiency and reduces network complexity.

Detailed Reporting

The DPX reporting tool, powered by Microsoft BI, provides a variety of reports for the DPX enterprise, including important information about backup types, DPX nodes, storage, status, job details, backup data growth and much more. Reporting is included at no additional cost. For more information on reporting, see our Power BI data sheet

System Requirements, Deployment & Compatibility
Catalogic’s enterprise data protection solution offers broad platform compatibility with your network, servers, applications and databases. For information on how to deploy DPX, please see the Catalogic DPX Deployment Guide

For specific compatibility information, see the Catalogic DPX Compatibility Guide.

Disk Space5 GB minimum free space on system drive for installation, and 100 GB for catalog storage (direct attached or SAN)4 GB minimum free space on system drive for installation*
Operating SystemPlease refer to latest Compatibility GuidePlease refer to latest Compatibility Guide
*Note: For Windows clients with limited disk space, a client-only installer is available, which requires only 1.2GB of temporary free space on the system drive. For details and restrictions, see the DPX Deployment Guide.
The above recommended configuration can support an enterprise with up to 300 clients. Larger enterprises can be accommodated by introducing additional master servers. DPX performance is dependent on backup job configuration and scheduling. The above recommended configuration is able to support approximately 25 concurrent jobs, with each job backing up one client. The master server may be virtualized; however, the required resources as specified above must be reserved for the virtual machines serving in this capacity. Please consult your virtualization vendor (i.e. VMware, Microsoft) to review supportability of tape library or tape drives by the guest OS where you planning to install the master server. For example, fiber channel tape devices are not supported by VMware ESX Server).

Since backup and restore performance is greatly dependent on disk and network I/O, choice of storage subsystems, network infrastructure components, as well as applicable configuration parameters for each will determine actual performance within specific IT environments.

Josh Foremaster

Assistant Director of IT Operations, Southern Utah University
"The configuration was simple, the support team quickly helped us through the usual startup glitches, and it works just as we had hoped. Scheduling backups has become a snap, and everything just works. We don’t need to watch over it or restart jobs anymore."
