DPX Product Overview
Enterprise backup and recovery capabilities for SAP HANA, Oracle, VMware, Microsoft workloads, and more.
SAP HANA Backup
SAP HANA backup is usually owned by database administrators, not only by backup administrators. DPX fits that operating model by allowing SAP HANA backup and recovery jobs to be initiated from SAP HANA Studio while DPX manages the backup infrastructure behind the scenes. After the DPX Client and DPX Plug-in for SAP HANA are installed on the SAP HANA node, the plugin connects SAP HANA's backup process to DPX-managed storage. The SAP HANA administrator continues to run complete, differential, incremental, tenant, and recovery operations from SAP HANA Studio. DPX provides the enterprise backup layer for target selection, cataloging, retention, monitoring, and recovery support.
SAP HANA is business-critical, performance-sensitive, and often operated by specialized database teams. Backup architecture must respect that reality.
SAP HANA teams need backup and recovery workflows that fit native SAP administration practices instead of forcing every job through a separate backup console.
Modern SAP HANA deployments often use multiple containers and tenant databases. Backup workflows must account for both system and tenant database recovery.
Enterprise HANA deployments may use clustered configurations for availability. Backup design needs to align with the supported HANA topology and operating system.
SAP HANA recovery is not just file retrieval. Teams need a documented path for selecting backup catalog entries, locating logs, and performing point-in-time recovery.
SAP HANA environments may need fast local recovery, long-term retention, tape retention, or vStor-based storage depending on compliance and infrastructure requirements.
Database administrators, backup administrators, and infrastructure teams need clear ownership boundaries so SAP HANA protection does not become fragile or dependent on one team.
The DPX Plug-in for SAP HANA connects SAP HANA Studio backup and recovery workflows to DPX-managed backup storage. The result is a database-native workflow for the DBA and centralized backup control for the DPX administrator.
SAP HANA administrators continue to work inside SAP HANA Studio. They register the database system, verify Backint settings, select backup type, choose Backint as the destination, and initiate backup or recovery.
DPX administrators provide the backup infrastructure: DPX Master Server, SAP HANA node registration, media pools, device pools, backup targets, monitoring, and retention.
DPX SAP HANA support is application-aware file-level protection through the SAP HANA plugin. DPX Block Data Protection is not available for SAP HANA.
The plugin integrates SAP HANA Studio backup and recovery workflows with DPX-managed storage and provides the Backint connection between SAP HANA and DPX.
DPX is configured as the Backint destination so SAP HANA can send backup data through the DPX plugin to the selected DPX device and media pool.
SAP HANA Studio can initiate complete data backups, differential backups, and incremental backups using Backint as the destination type.
DPX supports SAP HANA tenant database backup workflows initiated from SAP HANA Studio for multitenant environments.
SAP HANA recovery workflows can recover system databases or tenant databases from available backup catalog entries stored through DPX.
SAP HANA Studio recovery workflows can select a point in time and use backup catalog and log backup information to restore the database to the required recovery point.
Current compatibility lists multitenant support for SAP HANA 2.0 SP4 on SLES 12 SP4.
Current compatibility lists cluster support for SAP HANA 2.0 SP4 on SLES 12 SP4.
DPX supports backup storage across disk, tape, and vStor-based targets depending on the configured DPX environment and retention requirements.
The table below summarizes current public DPX support positioning for SAP HANA. Consult the current DPX Compatibility Guide for the authoritative support matrix and validate the exact SAP HANA, SLES, DPX, and deployment combination before designing production backup policies.
| Area | Current public DPX support position |
|---|---|
| SAP HANA version | SAP HANA 2.0 SP4 |
| Operating system | SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 Service Pack 4 |
| Protection model | File-level support through DPX Plug-in for SAP HANA |
| DPX Block Data Protection | Not available for SAP HANA |
| Basic Client | Supported |
| Multitenant | Supported |
| Cluster support | Supported |
| Instant Availability | Not supported |
Do not present SAP HANA support as generic support for every SAP HANA version or every Linux distribution. Compatibility is specific to the SAP HANA version, SLES release, and DPX version combination.
DPX Block Data Protection is not available for SAP HANA. Do not claim block-level SAP HANA backup.
Instant Availability is not supported for SAP HANA.
Always consult the current DPX Compatibility Guide for authoritative support details.
SAP HANA recovery remains a database-led workflow. After SAP HANA data has been protected through the DPX plugin, administrators can recover a system database or tenant database from SAP HANA Studio. Recovery workflows can use the backup catalog, available backup entries, log backup information, and point-in-time selection. For recovery planning, the critical preparation steps are completed and verified backups, registered and configured SAP HANA systems, confirmed access to the DPX-managed backup target, and a tested recovery procedure for both system and tenant database recovery paths.
SAP HANA backup data may need different retention and storage policies depending on recovery objectives, compliance rules, infrastructure design, and cost. DPX supports flexible target and retention strategies.
Use disk-based targets for operational recovery where faster access to recent SAP HANA backups is required.
Use DPX tape support where long-term retention, air-gapped media handling, or compliance-driven archival is required.
Use Catalogic vStor as a software-defined backup storage target for DPX environments that need efficient storage operations, replication, and centralized backup storage control.
Combine fast recovery targets with longer-term retention targets based on database criticality and compliance policy.
SAP HANA ransomware readiness depends on more than a completed backup job. DPX contributes to recoverability strategy by protecting backup infrastructure, keeping retention targets isolated from production compromise, and supporting tested recovery procedures.
