DPX vStor Product Brief

DPX vStor product brief: software-defined immutable backup repository built on ZFS, included with every Catalogic DPX license at no extra cost.

DPX vStor is the component of Catalogic DPX that receives and stores backup data, included with every DPX license at no extra cost. You install it on your own hardware, physical or virtual, and it becomes the repository DPX writes backups to. Every backup lands as an immutable snapshot that can’t be altered or encrypted, and can be locked against deletion.

Built on ZFS

vStor runs on ZFS, an enterprise file system designed for data integrity, tuned by Catalogic for backup workloads. That foundation gives vStor native snapshots, clones, replication, and data reduction, with effectively unlimited snapshot counts so retention policies aren’t constrained by snapshot limits. On top of that foundation, vStor adds:

  • Immutable snapshots on primary and replica targets, with a deletion lock that requires MFA to unlock.
  • Asynchronous node-to-node replication with incremental copies, and no requirement for matching hardware on either side.
  • Deduplication and compression, usable separately or together.
  • AES volume encryption at rest, backed by a keystore for secrets and role-based access.
  • A full UI for managing pools, volumes, network settings, and updates, with no command line required.
  • Snapshot Explorer, which restores individual files directly from a snapshot even without the backup catalog.

Flexible deployment

vStor runs as a virtual machine or on a physical server, sized to your budget and performance target. Because it’s software rather than a fixed appliance, you can use hardware from any vendor and upgrade individual components instead of replacing the whole box, and you can mix node sizes, with a flash-backed server in the datacenter alongside small virtual nodes at remote sites. If you’re migrating from NetApp or open-source storage, vStor is simply defined as another disk target in DPX, so job management stays the same.

vStor also works alongside GuardMode, whose post-backup scans check vStor snapshots for ransomware activity so you know which recovery point is clean before you restore.
