Why this matters

Proxmox Backup Server only protects Proxmox, and most organizations aren’t making a clean, one-time switch to it. They’re running Proxmox alongside VMware, Hyper-V, or physical servers, often mid-migration, and still need broader coverage than a Proxmox-only tool can provide. Catalogic DPX protects VMware, Proxmox VE, and Hyper-V consistently from one console, so a hypervisor decision doesn’t have to double as a data protection decision.

Two ways to protect Proxmox VE

DPX offers a choice between agentless and agent-based protection, and organizations can mix both within the same environment depending on the workload.

  • Agentless covers broad, general-purpose VM backup and restore. There’s no agent to deploy or maintain, file-level recovery runs through vStor Snapshot Explorer, and it’s best suited to VM-level protection across many machines.
  • Agent-based goes deeper for critical, consistency-sensitive workloads, with application-aware protection for SQL Server, Oracle, and SAP HANA, plus file-level, block-level, and bare metal recovery.

Technical overview

  • A dedicated Proxmox job type handles full and incremental backup to vStor, full VM restore, job scheduling, and node management, all from the DPX web UI.
  • The vStor backup target brings ZFS deduplication and compression, immutable snapshots, and replication for disaster recovery.
  • vStor Snapshot Explorer restores individual files directly from a Proxmox VM snapshot.
  • The agent-based option extends long-term archiving to Amazon S3, Azure Blob, Wasabi, Backblaze B2, or LTO tape.
  • The same console also protects VMware, Hyper-V, Nutanix AHV, and physical servers, so Proxmox joins an environment DPX already covers rather than requiring a separate tool.
