DataCore Swarm’s Object Lock, replication, and erasure coding protect against hardware failure. They don’t recover a bucket after a bad lifecycle policy deletes it, or after admin credentials are compromised. Catalogic DPX adds that missing layer: an independent backup copy on vStor, connected through Swarm’s own S3 API, running on infrastructure you already own.
Swarm at the storage layer, DPX at the backup layer
Swarm’s S3 Object Lock, versioning, replication, and erasure coding protect data at the storage layer. DPX adds a separate layer on top: an independent backup copy on vStor that can recover from application errors, accidental deletion, and compromised credentials, since it doesn’t inherit what happens to the primary copy.
How DPX backs up Swarm
DPX connects to Swarm through its S3 API and writes full and incremental backups to vStor, with a separate volume per protected bucket. Object versioning keeps the 5 most recent versions by default, and restores run at the bucket level from the DPX web interface, with single-object access available through vStor’s built-in MinIO service. Swarm can also work the other way around, serving as an archive target that receives DPX’s own Block and VMware Agentless backups.
Works alongside FileFly
DPX protects DataCore Swarm on its own, or together with FileFly if you use it. Swarm is S3-compatible object storage built for archive, backup, and long-term retention; FileFly is an optional addition that moves inactive files from Windows file servers and NAS storage onto Swarm, freeing up as much as 50-80% of primary storage. Migrated files stay accessible from their original location, since Swarm retrieves the data automatically when a file is opened again, and data written directly to or tiered onto Swarm often can’t simply be deleted, since it may be needed to comply with data retention regulations or to recall records of past activity.
