Long-Term Retention and Archival

Some data has to be kept for years – for compliance, for the business, or for peace of mind. Catalogic DPX is a long-term retention and archival solution that moves protected data to cloud, tape, and disk, with automated retention policies that keep storage costs under control.

Keep data for years, without the cost or risk

Backups protect you from yesterday's mistake; archives protect you for the next decade. Catalogic DPX is a long-term retention and archival solution that takes data you've already protected and moves it to lower-cost, durable storage — cloud object storage, tape, or disk — where it can live for years. Automated retention policies decide what to keep and what to expire, so your storage footprint stays predictable and your compliance obligations stay covered.

DPX long-term retention — vStor, cloud object storage, and LTO tape air-gapped archive

Archive to the storage that fits

DPX archives protected data to durable, cost-efficient destinations — choose the right tier for each retention requirement.

Cloud object storage archive

Cloud object storage

Archive to Amazon S3, Azure Blob, Wasabi, Backblaze B2, and other S3-compatible clouds for off-site, scalable retention.

Tape archive

Tape

Write to LTO tape libraries for offline, air-gapped archives that stay isolated from networks and ransomware.

Disk directory archive

Disk directory

Keep archive copies on disk for fast, on-premises access when you need older data back quickly.

Automated retention

Automated retention

Set a retention period per job and let DPX expire data on schedule, reclaiming space automatically.

Deduplication and compression

Deduplicated & compressed

Efficient block-level storage with deduplication and compression shrinks the footprint of long-term copies.

Immutable retention

Immutable copies

Protect retained data from tampering or premature deletion with vStor immutability and deletion lock.

Archive to cloud and tape

DPX archive jobs create long-term copies of data you've already backed up, then send them to durable storage built for the long haul:

  • Archive Block backup and VMware Agentless backup data to cloud object storage, tape, or a disk directory.
  • Store backups in S3-compatible clouds including Amazon S3, Azure Blob, Wasabi, Backblaze B2, Cloudian, MinIO, and more.
  • Run archives as base, then incremental or differential, so only new data is moved on each cycle.
  • Recover archived data directly when an old restore point is needed, without a separate import step.

Air-gapped tape for the ultimate safe copy

When data has to survive anything — including a ransomware attack that reaches your network — tape is hard to beat. DPX treats tape as a versatile, long-term archival destination with built-in media management for retention and recycling. Tape libraries connect directly by SAS or Fibre Channel, over a SAN, or through NDMP-enabled NAS, and LTO drives support hardware encryption. Because finished tapes sit offline, they form a true air gap that no attacker can reach across the wire — the last, clean copy when everything else is compromised.

Retention that manages itself

Long-term retention only works if it's automatic. DPX enforces your retention rules and reclaims space without manual cleanup:

  • Each backup and archive job carries its own retention period, so different data can be kept for different lengths of time.
  • The DPX condense operation removes expired backups on schedule and trims the catalog.
  • Expired on-disk block data is deleted and tapes are freed for re-use once every backup on them has passed retention.
  • Run condense daily to keep storage usage predictable and the catalog lean.

Tier older data off primary storage

Not every recovery point needs to sit on your fastest storage. With vStor data offloading, DPX automatically moves older snapshots to a secondary vStor appliance based on age-based policies – freeing primary capacity while keeping historical data available through clone-based retrieval. You keep more history online for longer, without paying premium-storage prices for data you rarely touch.

Retention you can trust

Archived data is only valuable if it’s intact when you finally need it. DPX pairs long-term retention with immutable vStor storage and deletion lock, so retained copies can’t be altered or removed before their time – whether by accident or by an attacker. Combined with offline tape, your long-term archive becomes a defensible, tamper-proof record.

Why teams choose DPX for long-term retention

Lower storage cost

Deduplication, compression, and cloud or tape tiering keep the cost of keeping data for years firmly under control.

Compliance-ready

Per-job retention periods and immutable copies help you meet regulatory and legal hold requirements with evidence.

Resilient by design

Air-gapped tape and immutable snapshots give you a clean, untouchable copy even after a ransomware event.

Long-term retention questions, answered

Where can DPX archive my data for long-term retention?
DPX archives protected data to cloud object storage (Amazon S3, Azure Blob, Wasabi, Backblaze B2, and other S3-compatible clouds), LTO tape, or a disk directory – so you can match each retention requirement to the right cost and durability.
What data can be archived?
DPX archive jobs support Block backup and VMware Agentless backup data. Archives run as a base job and then incremental or differential cycles, moving only new data each time.
How does DPX control storage costs over time?
Each job has its own retention period, and the DPX condense operation automatically expires old backups, deletes expired on-disk data, and frees tapes for re-use. Deduplication and compression further shrink the footprint of long-term copies.
How is long-term data protected from ransomware?
DPX combines offline, air-gapped tape with immutable vStor storage and deletion lock, so retained copies stay tamper-proof. See cyber-resilient recovery for the full picture.
