Archive to cloud and tape
DPX archive jobs create long-term copies of data you've already backed up, then send them to durable storage built for the long haul:
- Archive Block backup and VMware Agentless backup data to cloud object storage, tape, or a disk directory.
- Store backups in S3-compatible clouds including Amazon S3, Azure Blob, Wasabi, Backblaze B2, Cloudian, MinIO, and more.
- Run archives as base, then incremental or differential, so only new data is moved on each cycle.
- Recover archived data directly when an old restore point is needed, without a separate import step.
Air-gapped tape for the ultimate safe copy
When data has to survive anything — including a ransomware attack that reaches your network — tape is hard to beat. DPX treats tape as a versatile, long-term archival destination with built-in media management for retention and recycling. Tape libraries connect directly by SAS or Fibre Channel, over a SAN, or through NDMP-enabled NAS, and LTO drives support hardware encryption. Because finished tapes sit offline, they form a true air gap that no attacker can reach across the wire — the last, clean copy when everything else is compromised.
Retention that manages itself
Long-term retention only works if it's automatic. DPX enforces your retention rules and reclaims space without manual cleanup:
- Each backup and archive job carries its own retention period, so different data can be kept for different lengths of time.
- The DPX condense operation removes expired backups on schedule and trims the catalog.
- Expired on-disk block data is deleted and tapes are freed for re-use once every backup on them has passed retention.
- Run condense daily to keep storage usage predictable and the catalog lean.
Tier older data off primary storage
Not every recovery point needs to sit on your fastest storage. With vStor data offloading, DPX automatically moves older snapshots to a secondary vStor appliance based on age-based policies – freeing primary capacity while keeping historical data available through clone-based retrieval. You keep more history online for longer, without paying premium-storage prices for data you rarely touch.

Archived data is only valuable if it’s intact when you finally need it.
